History


The Maritime Museum was founded in 1916. Thanks to the success of the First Dutch Maritime Exhibition in 1913, the museum owns the most prominent maritime collections in the world. The museum was originally located in a building in Cornelis Schuytstraat until 2018 auction house Christie's. Since 1973, the museum has been located at the Oosterdok in the IJ in Amsterdam. Purchasing princess Beatrix of the Netherlands reopened the museum in April of that year at the new location. The museum was closed during a renovation between 2007 and 2011. The design of the renovation plan is by the architect Liesbeth van der Pol.
